For several years I've been watching these women (only about 10% of cashers are men, mostly students on tempory contract), working in those special "cashier spaces" in the supermarkets. I notice the signs of feminine charm hidden under the ungainly uniform imposed by their employer and last but not least, the codified behavior "SGGT+" (Smile, Greetings, Good-bye, Thanks and the bonus, good week-end, Happy Easter, ...). The cashier summarizes into welcoming the customer, then she concentrates on the merchandise coming up on the belt, and asks if he has the stores card to pay the bill. Once again, she looks at her till to total up, the critical moment. If there is an error, a difference between what is due and what is paid it could cost her job. Roughly 8 hours per day, full time or less they have three minutes per hour for a rest stop, but the timing is decided by the boss. The cashier then has a few minutes at the cafeteria, or to smoke, or speak with her colleagues choking a sandwich, maybe exchanging a few words about the kids or christmas coming up. Day to day, the job is the same Uniform, Badge, Timeclock, SGGT, always the same hair done, clean, and the service, nothing can change.
