MUNOZ_YAGUE Carlos contact photographer • Memory of a civil war
In 2001, I was on report in Tolede when I visited Alcazar. I noticed the still effectiv tributes that were given to the franquist regim. Amazed by this situation and the lack of distance that Spain maintains about its own, particularly a part of the army, I intended to know if any visibility would be found from the civil war, from the repression and the dictatorship.
For four years, I kept the touch thanks to quick trips and smart immersion inside the memory of that nightmare, within the stigmatization of what was, let say a butchery. Beyond each other opinion, I was astonished by the blindness and the autism attitude of many spanish ones ; basically, mostly by the ignorance of the new generations. Unfortunately, without oral transmision, past cannot but be learned throught books. Too numerous ? No, there are never enough. Nevertheless, each historian, each writer, each witness have its proper version of the history.
I wished to stay neutral, perhaps awkwardly, looking forward to feel the places, the objects, the persons, so as to feel better what was that war. The intention of re-conciliation is a hard project. Defensiv from my own, I found myself confrontating two antagonist visions of Spain : from opponed historical monuments, from opponed gaps, from opponed flags, a dictatorship that managed to keep the expression as an hostage. The purpose is not to establish a compatibility that would lead to the measured balance of the number of dead, to explain how each one was being killed, altogether considering the methodic torturer practical. The crual game is already too much on use for 40 years. In that conflict, every dead becomes a too much one, to begin with, and are the all Spain that have been losing here
