• FUERTEVENTURA: Late hope island |
|
In 2003, 12.000 illegal immigrants arrived in Fuerteventura, population 80,000, one of the Canary Islands. This landing of pateras, the small boats that carry the immigrants, is now a part of the local economy. More labor is needed to cope with the recent tourist expansion in Corralejo, the seaside resort, where hotels and restaurants are flourishing.
Many illegal immigrants, mostly from Morocco and the southern Sahara, embark on this dangerous journey. Many of them are teenagers or pregnant women. Those caught by the Guardia civil will be taken care of until their majority or until the majority of their child for expecting mothers. But others won't even make it to Fuerteventura: their journey will end in the island's small cemetery.
